UBC Buchanan A Block
We provided audio/visual design services to UBC for the 2010 renovation of classrooms in the University of British Columbia Buchanan A Block. Part of an ongoing classroom upgrade program, this renovation included 4 lecture theatres on the main floor, the merging of two classrooms on the second floor into one wide classroom, and the upgrade of two classrooms on the second floor.
There were two primary changes in the AV system upgrades in these rooms; the change to 16:10 aspect ratio screens from 4:3 XGA screens, and the deployment of an HDCP compliant digital video switching and routing to future proof the theatres for the growing number of digital output laptops that needed to be supported.
These rooms used a fiber based digital video switching system that was new to the market place. At the time there was only one HDCP compliant large scale video switching system on the market, and it was not without some teething problems. After some concerted on site technical support efforts by the manufacturer, the systems were sorted out.
The four theatres on the main floor were configured to allow overflow audio and video connectivity to bolster the seat count for larger classes or presentations. That allowed audio and video to be sent from the big theatre to the smaller theatres, and would also allow two audio interaction for audience questions.
The lobby can also be fed overflow audio and video content, or used as a stand alone zone.
The classrooms on the upper floor were each fitted with dual screens and projectors, and fiber based digital video switchers.
The large theatre on the main floor has dual 16:10 screens and a third centre 16:9 screen for use as theatre for a Film Arts program. The AV playback audio system uses a pair of line arrays augmented with a pair of BagEnd dual 12" subwoofers with the extended bass processors to provide a good simulation of a cinema sound system.
